24 Hours To Live
“What if you had 24 hours to live?”
This is a question we discuss for fun with our friends.
Once the conversation is over, we say, “Thankfully, I have plenty of years left.”
“That stuff happens to other people, not me,” we think. “I have plenty of time left.”
But you don’t.
I’m here to call bullshit on this mindset right now.
You are not as immortal as you think.
You are one second away from your next car crash, hospital phone call, or breaking your leg.
There is an end date.
The date is just moving, day by day.
“It’s somewhere in the future; you don’t know when exactly.”
Some try not to think about it, but for others, the certainty of death is kept on the frontier of their thoughts.
Why?
So that they might actually live.
Among them are the Stoics, the fearless philosophers who used every second of their time here to produce marvelous things.
The result?
The last good emperor who ruled Rome. (Marcus Aurelius)
An ex-slave who made his name synonymous with “Unshakeable”. (Epictetus)
The equivalent of a modern-day entrepreneur who died heroically under an evil ruler. (Seneca)
Will you be the next one?
It depends on how you’ll use your time here.
Use death as motivation, and one day, you’ll thank yourself for doing so.
Till next time,
Said The Stoic
