The Stoics Said Depression Is A Myth
Here's why exactly
Nowadays, everyone has depression, or it’s just what they want you to believe.
It has become a trend for people to say that they’re depressed.
They think that using that word gives them the excuse to sit around all day and do nothing.
“I guess I just have the depression gene,” they say.
But depression is far simpler than you think, and most of the time, it’s actually boredom that causes your disappointment in life.
Thankfully, the Stoics, and especially Seneca, provided us with clear reasons why your life is not as terrible as you think.
Reason 1: Disappointment often stems from a lack of a clear sense of purpose.
“If you don’t know where you’re going, no wind is favorable.”
People have a deep urge to feel useful and produce. Stoicism teaches that finding one's unique path and direction in life is crucial for fulfillment and combating feelings of aimlessness.
Reason 2: Your life is not challenging enough.
“The greater the difficulty, the more glory in surmounting it.”
Stoicism challenges the notion of viewing problems as sources of depression. How can the very things that make us stronger cause sadness… they would say. Instead, the Stoics advocated for turning the obstacle upside down, and seeing what exists on the other side of the wall—growth, opportunity, learning, experience.
Reason 3: Your life is way too easy.
“I judge you unfortunate because you haven’t experienced misfortune.”
In today's comfortable lifestyle, facing adversity becomes increasingly rare, contributing to feelings of dissatisfaction and a lack of motivation. If there’s nothing to challenge you, your days become identical and monotonous. The Stoics not only embraced challenges, but actively created some for themselves—cold showers, walking, sleeping on the floor, fasting—to build resilience and mental strength.
Reason 4: You suffer in your imagination.
