Pretend Today Is The End
“Live each day as if it were your last” is a cliché. It’s common sense.
But you know what they say?
Common sense is not that common after all.
“Let us postpone nothing,” Seneca said.
“The one who puts the finishing touches every day in their lives is never out of time.”
Does Seneca advise us to drink till puking and find an orgy to join?
Of course not (although the chicks there would be nice!)
The Stoics advised us to view each day as a “Bonus Day.”
So one year ago, I decided that my life was over.
“You have lived your life,” said Marcus Aurelius.
“Now take what’s left and live it properly.”
So for me, that day was the last one.
Since then, every trip, every night out with friends, every kiss, and every hug have been a bonus.
“I’m living on borrowed time,” Seneca said.
Why?
Because I demystified death in my head.
I understood that God was smart enough to have an end date.
Fools use it as fear; others use it as motivation.
There’s no right or wrong; it’s just how you choose to view it.
“You have power over your mind,” Marcus Aurelius reminds us.
So use that power to properly use the only unreliable resource we have—our time.
Till next time,
Said The Stoic
PS. If you’re having a difficult period right now and everything seems pointless, you are not alone. We created a short YouTube video with Stoic Advice for Hard Times. I’m sure you’ll love it.
